There’s something beautifully punk about strapping yourself to a self-balancing wheel you printed in your garage.

While most EUC riders are content to debate KingSong versus Begode, a small but dedicated community has been asking a different question: Why buy when you can build?

Enter the EGG

The EGG Electric Unicycle project started almost a decade ago when a Portuguese maker decided commercial wheels weren’t cutting it. Not because they were bad—but because they were closed. Proprietary firmware. Sealed battery packs. No way to swap components without voiding your warranty and probably your dignity.

EGG changed that. It’s a fully open-source design: 3D printable shell, off-the-shelf motor controllers (MicroWorks 30B4 is popular), standard 60V battery configurations, and firmware you can actually read and modify. The project won “Best Maker Project” at Makerfaire Lisbon in 2016 and has been quietly inspiring builders ever since.

What You Actually Get

Building an EGG or similar DIY wheel isn’t about matching production specs—a Begode Master or Veteran Sherman will obliterate any homebrew build on paper. That’s not the point.

What you get instead:

Complete customization. Want a tandem configuration? A cargo rack? Lights that sync to music? When you control the design, you control everything. One builder added a custom battery configuration that gave him 40km range on a wheel that originally shipped with half that.

Repairability. When something breaks on a commercial wheel, you’re often looking at shipping it overseas or praying your local dealer can source parts. DIY wheels use components you can buy from AliExpress or harvest from dead hoverboards. The motor, controller, and battery are all separate systems you understand because you assembled them.

Education. Building a self-balancing vehicle from scratch teaches you more about motor control, battery management, and IMU sensor fusion than any amount of YouTube videos. The EGG project uses an MPU6050 inertial measurement unit—the same chip in countless Arduino projects—meaning the skills transfer everywhere.

The Catch (Because There’s Always One)

Let’s be real: building a functional EUC from scratch is hard.

The self-balancing algorithm alone requires a solid grasp of PID control. Battery building demands respect—lithium cells don’t forgive mistakes. One community member estimated their first build took 200+ hours from research to first ride.

And even then, you’ll probably hit 20mph tops. Maybe 25 miles of range if your battery configuration is generous. That’s fine for neighborhood cruises, less ideal for your 15-mile commute.

The DIY community knows this. They’re not trying to compete with wheels that cost $3,000 and can do 50mph. They’re proving a principle: that the technology inside an EUC isn’t magic, and you don’t need to be a mega-corporation to build one.

The Broader DIY EUC Scene

EGG isn’t the only game in town. The Electric Unicycle Forum has an entire section dedicated to mods, repairs, and DIY builds. Riders share everything from battery upgrade guides to custom firmware patches that unlock features manufacturers disabled.

Some mods are practical: waterproofing kits, handle extensions, better pedals. Others are pure maker flex: underglow LEDs, Bluetooth speakers, phone charging ports. A few brave souls have even documented adding suspension to wheels that shipped rigid.

The ethos is the same as the early e-bike conversion scene. Don’t like what manufacturers offer? Build what you want.

Who’s This Actually For?

Not everyone. This isn’t a hobby for people who want a vehicle—it’s for people who want a project that occasionally functions as a vehicle.

If you’re the type who has a 3D printer gathering dust, an Arduino collection that keeps growing, and strong opinions about which battery spot welder to buy, the DIY EUC world will feel like home.

If you just want to get from A to B, buy a V12S and save yourself 200 hours.

The Point

There’s value in understanding the machines we ride. When your wheel is a black box, you’re dependent on manufacturer support that may or may not exist in five years. When you built the thing yourself, you’re never truly stranded.

Plus, let’s be honest: explaining to curious strangers that you’re riding a self-balancing wheel you printed in your garage hits different than “I ordered it online.”
